The weekend started off with a bang with the Currier and Ives at the Meadows where we saw Allegiant win in 1:52.3 for driver Hunter Myers and trainer Vernon Beachy the fastest mile in the Currier and Ives Stake regardless of gender in its 50 Years of existence. From there we focused our attention to Tioga Downs where we saw the New York Sire Stakes 3 Year Old Fillies Trot be contested in two divisions for $57,000. We also saw the New York Excelsior "A" Series 3 Year Old Fillies Trot be contested in three divisions for a purse of $20,000 per division. The New York Sire Stakes saw Honey Sweet trained by Alagna take the first division in 1:54.2 and the Butenschoen trainee R Melina take the second in a matching 1:54.2 both divisions goin to driver Tyler Buter. Tyler Buter had a solid day in the sulky as he took both divisions of the NYSS and another division of the New York Excelsior Series giving him three stake wins on the day.
As we moved north of the border to Woodbine Mohawk Park we got to see some of the top 3 Year Old Trotters in Canada go in two divisions of the Goodtimes Series Eliminations for a purse of $35,000 CDN. In the first division we saw Top Mast take his division in a mark of 1:53.4 for Desiree Jones. In the second division we saw Highland Kismet his division in 1:54 for trainer Mark Etsell. Setting up a field of ten top trotters to go forth this Saturday in the 2024 Goodtimes 3 Year Old Trot for a estimated $250,000 CDN. We also got to see the Roses Are Red 3 Year Old & Up Fillies and Mares Eliminations take place for a purse of $34,000 CDN. In the first of two eliminations we saw the red hot Twin B Joe Fresh destroy her field in 1:50.4 for the Ryder and Dunn connection with a strong burst of speed off the last turn Dunn was able to shut down his mare halfway down the lane in a final panel of :29 seconds in a very impressive victory. The second division saw Sylvia Hanover and Always B Naughty clash in what was a very impressive victory for Always B Naughty the Takter trainee never had the plugs pulled or had Louis Roy move in the bike as the turned away Sylvia Hanover down the lane in 1:49.3 setting up next weeks final for a estimated purse of $305,000 CDN.
Saturday we started the action off with the number two and three horses on the road to the Hambo top 10 list in Security Protected trained by Marcus Melander and T C I trained by Ron Burke take their calls in the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings Trot at Pocono Downs. Security Protected took the first division in 1:54.2 holding off all challenges for a purse of $72,587. In the second division T C I continued his road to the Hambo for Miller and Burke in a 1:53.3 mile goin for a purse of $72,187. The card also had four divisions of The Stallion Series 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings Trot goin for a purse of $20,000. Marcus Melander had a quality day with his stable sending out eight trainees and bringing home five checks in which three of them were for wins giving him three out of the six stake races contested on the day.
Saturday Night saw Northfield Downs put on a stellar card packed with stake action from start to finish headlined by their annual Battle of Lake Erie. The stake action started off with the hot connection of Burke and Page taking the Ohio Sire Stakes 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings 2nd Leg Trot for a purse of $100,000 with Tennessee Tom in 1:55. The card also saw six divisions of the Buckeye Stallion Series 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings 2nd Leg Pace take place thru the entirety of the card leading us up to the $200,000 Battle of Lake Erie Free For All Pace which we saw Desperate Man make a break in the first turn to put in a galant effort to come up short finishing 3rd and favorite Bythemissal falter down the lane and finish 5th. But there was Jeremy Smith steering Little Rocket Man for trainer Ken Rucker in the right place at the right time to take home the big event in 1:52.4. Afterwards we saw the MGM Buckeye Distaff Ohio Sired Mares 4 Year Old & Up by Invitation Pace take to the track with Racing For Three for trainer AJ Carlo take the $75,000 event in 1:54. The card saw Chris Page rack up three victories and fellow drivers Jeremy Smith and Ronnie Wrenn Jr take home driving doubles all in stake action giving them seven out of the nine stake events on the care. Also Ron Burke had a training double on the card in stake action.
Woodbine Mohawk Park was the spotlight of the racing action Saturday Night with the eliminations of the Ambro Flight, Fan Hanover, and the Pepsi North American Cup XLI. The Ambro Flight saw Fillies & Mares Trotter take to action in two divisions for a purse of $35,000 CDN. In the first division we saw M Ms Dream trained by Ron Burke win in a measured 1:52.4 for driver Dave Miller. The second division saw Call Me Goo hold on in 1:53.3 for trainer Jason Skinner and driver Tim Tetrick after a speedy 3rd panel. Setting up $210,000 CDN final Saturday night. The Fan Hanover series saw the Burke and Dunn connection take center stage My Girl Ej took the first elimination in 1:50.1 followed by stable mate Canigetalouploup in 1:51.1 both trained by Ron Burke and driven by Dexter Dunn. Thus setting up a stable mate show down in the $420,000 CDN Fan Hanover Final on Saturday night. The big event of the evening was the Pepsi North American Cup XLI 2024 eliminations which gave us three divisions of action. The first elimination saw Captains Quarters driven by Jody Jamieson and trained by Herbert Holland score in 1:49.1 punching himself a spot in the final. The second division was fun for Funtime Bayama who captured his division in 1:50.1 for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Richard Moreau what a special moment this could be for the Filion Family Saturday night. The last division saw the hot horse on the scene Nijinsky win in 1:50.2 from off the pace for driver Louis-Phillippe Roy and trainer Anthony Beaton continuing his hot streak and punching his ticket to the million dollar final. Canada came to fight Saturday night as they defended their home soil in all three divisions of the North American Cup leading to what looks to be a big night for Canadian harness racing. The card did see trainer Ron Burke take 3 of the stake events and driver Dexter Dunn have a stake double on the card.
Sunday saw us turn our eyes to the Delaware River at Harrah's Philadelphia with five divisions of the Stallion Series 3 Year Old Fillies Trot for a purse of $20,000 and three divisions of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes 3 Year Old Fillies Trot for a purse of $48,133. The first division of the PASS was taken by Elista Hanover in 1:53 for driver David Miller and trainer Annie Stoebe. The second division was taken by Draw The Line in 1:54.1 for driver David Miller and trainer Ron Burke. Lastly we saw Tuis Angel take the last division of the PASS in 1:54 for driver Braxton Boyd and trainer Donald Wiest. The card saw the Tetrick and Wallin connection take two divisions of the Stallion Series and had driver David Miller continue his hot weekend of stake action taking four of the stake events.
