The weekend of stake action saw us begin with Ontario Sire Stakes Grassroots for 3 Year Old Trotting Fillies at Woodbine Mohawk Park where we saw four divisions go for a purse of $20,000 CDN team McNair had a training and driving double taking half the stakes action with Radical Legacy and Valentine Bluechip.
Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday night had more Ontario Sire Stakes Grassroots races for 3 Year Old Filly Pacers goin in three division for a purse of $20,000 CDN which was highlighted by a Dr Ian Moore trainee in Ann driven by Bob McClure winning her division in 1:50 final panel in 27.4
Earlier in the day we saw a slew of stake races take place at Vernon Downs where we had two divisions of the New York Sire Stakes 3 Year Old Filly Pace for a purse of $57,000 and four divisions of the New York Excelsior Series for 3 Year Old Filly Pacers for a purse of $20,000. In the first division of the NYSS we saw Stepabovetherest driven by Braxten Boyd and trained by Nicholas Deviate fly home in :27.4 to win in a new track record of 1:49.4. The second division saw Tarrific destroy her foes winning by 9 widening lengths under wraps in a last quarter of :27 for driver Jason Bartlett and trainer Chris Ryder in a mile of 1:49.4 matching the track record set in the previous division.
Scioto Downs sent out four divisions of The Buckeye Stallion Series for 3 Year Old Filly Pacers for a purse of $20,000. Which was highlighted by Heartofthesea driven by Chris Page and trained by Brian Brown taking her division in 1:51.2 last quarter :28.4. Also Fearless Ginger who was driven by Austin Hanners and trained by Timothy Lane in a matching 1:51.2 mile coming her last quarter in :28.1. Austin Hanners also had a driving double in the stake action taking two out of the four divisions of the Buckeye Series.
Yonkers Raceway took center stage on Friday Night as they sent out one elimination of the MGM Yonkers Trot for a purse of $25,000 and two eliminations of the MGM Grand Messenger for a purse of $25,000. The MGM Yonkers Trot saw Bargain trained by Nancy Takter and driven by Yannick Gingras fend off a deep stretch duel from Fly By trained by Tony Alagna and driven by Scott Zeron. Bargain stuck his nose out at the wire in a 1:54.3 mile coming a last quarter in :28.3. The first elimination of the MGM Grand Messenger saw Howlenthehills driven by Matt Kakaley and trained by Travis Alexander avoid a first turn disaster as Captain Skippy driven by Dexter Dunn and trained by Ake Svanstedt blasted off the gate before imploding on a break in the first turn pushing Howlenthehills very wide. Howlenthehills dug in game and held off the field in 1:53.3 final quarter :28.2. The second division saw Janelle Granny return from the Pepsi North America Cup to draw another wide post drawing post 7 and getting the training services of Scott Di Domenico and steered by Tim Tetrick blast off the gate and take charge of this field. Janelle Granny would go on to take this division in a measured 1:52.3 last quarter in :27.4 holding off a late flying Sweet Beach Life with driver Matt Kakaley trained by Travis Alexander who came home in :27.2 to take second.
Saturday had a full slate of stake races spanning the entire day. We saw Pocono Downs send out a day card featuring four divisions of the Stallion Series for 3 Year Old Filly Pacers for a purses of $20,000 and three divisions of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for 3 Year Old Pacing Fillies two divisions goin for a purse of $49,765 and one for a purse of $50,075. The first division of the PASS saw Asweetbeachhere storm home to win in 1:50.3 final quarter in :27 for driver David Miller and trainer Andrew Harris. In the second division we saw My Girl Ej win in a fast 1:49.2 last quarter in :26.4 for Dexter Dunn and trainer Ron Burke. The last division saw Rocket Den win in 1:50.3 last quarter in :27.1 for driver Andrew McCarthy and trainer Brett Pelling giving both of them a double on the card in stakes action as they also took one division of the Stallion Series with Davenport. The card also saw David Miller continue his hot hand in PASS this season with a driving double taking the first PASS division and also a Stallion Series division with Parkavenuelisa trained by Linda Toscano.
Scioto Downs sent forth two divisions of the Ohio Sire Stakes for 3 Year Old Filly Pacers both for a purse of $65,000. The first division saw a speed show as Rose Run Zoey driven by Tyler Smith and trained by Ryan Miller tied the track record in 1:49.4 flying home in :27.1. The second division saw Seaside Diva win for the connections of Chris Page and Ron Burke in 1:51 last quarter of :27.4.
The Saturday action was all capped off at The Meadowlands with two divisions of the Graduate Series for 4 Year Old Trotters goin for a purse of $50,000. The card also had two divisions of the Graduate Series for 4 Year Old Pacers goin for a purse of $50,000 and one division of the Miss Versatility Mares Open goin for a purse of $40,000. The first division of the Graduate Series 4 Year Old Open Trot 3rd Leg saw Winner's Bet driven by Dexter Dunn and trained by Nancy Takter make his second start of the season after setting a track record last week in 1:50 to only do better in this start. Dunn went to the point and set the torrid fractions getting to a half in :54.4 off a :27.3 second quarter to hit the 3/4 pole in 1:23 before turning on the burners and leaving the completion behind in a final quarter of :26.3 setting a new track record in 1:49.3. The second division of Trotters saw Nancy Takter take and sweep both divisions of the Graduate Series for 4 Year Old Trotters with Hasty Bid driven by Yannick Gingras fly home in :26.4 to win in a mile of 1:50.2. Next up on the card we saw the Miss Versatility Mares Open Trot 3rd Leg go to a well rated and strong Tactical Mounds driven by Scott Zeron and trained by Megan Scran in 1:51 last quarter :27.2. The night cap saw two divisions of the Graduate Series for 4 Year Old pacers be decided in race 10 and 12. The first division saw a 23-1 upset as Act Fast driven by Todd McCarthy and trained by Ron Burke storm home in :26.1 winning in a mile of 1:47.3. The final division of the day saw Ken Hanover take charge to a half in :54.3 and power down the lane in an impressive :25.4 final quarter winning his division in 1:47.4 for driver David Miller and trainer Roland Mallar.
Early Sunday morning we got a treat to see Elitloppet 2024 winner Horsy Dream take to the track at Vincennes and take on Idao De Tillard in the Prix Rene Balliere in which he set parked out the whole way second over before exploding down the lane to win in impressive fashion continuing to show that he is the best sprinter in all of Europe.
Rideau Carleton Raceway took all the headlines on Sunday as they hosted two Ontario Sire Stakes Gold races. The first of the two races took to the gate in race 6 where we saw the Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Leg 2 for 3 Year Old Colt Pace go for a purse of $140,000 CDN. Trophy Taker trained by David Menary and driven by James MacDonald took the early lead to cut out hot fractions carrying the field to the top of the lane off a 3/4 marker in 1:22.4 before being over taken by Storm Shadow driven by Bob McClure and trained by Dr Ian Moore as he stormed home in a final quarter of :29 seconds to take the ONSS Gold in 1:51.4. The second Ontario Sire Stake Gold Leg 2 race was for 3 Year Old Pacing Fillies goin for a purse of $140,000 CDN. Odds On Platinum trained by Dr Ian Moore and driven by Stephane Brosseau who got a catch drive due to Sylvain Filion not being able to make it set hot fractions to a quarter in :26.2 half in :55.2 before giving way to Bob McClure and Greatest Pleasure trained by Luc Blais at the 3/4 pole in 1:22.3. At the top of the lane Stephane pulled Odds On Platinum back out of the pocket and swept by Greatest Pleasure down the lane to win her division in 1:50.3 missing the track record by a 5th of a second and setting the fastest mile in Canada this season for a 3 Year old on a 5/8s mile track. Thus allowing Dr Ian Moore to sweep both events on the card and give the fans at Rideau Carleton Raceway a exciting night of racing.
